Remember back when I was talking smack about making money online?
The cliff-hanger was I never actually told you how much money I’ve made.
Today I will establish my street cred, yo.
Now don’t just scroll down to the dollar signs and say OMG! Hang with me.
The Niche within a Niche
Making money with a blog requires a very narrow audience. I call it finding a niche within a niche. Example, say you like volleyball. Cool. But starting a blog about volleyball is too broad. It will be difficult to keep an audience and maintain relevant ads on your blog. You need a blog on oh say,Volleyball Drills.
Back in 2006 I started two niche blogs. I solely used Google Adsense for ads and I found it very difficult to blog several times a week. I wasn’t all that interested in the topics either.
In my first 12 months I made just over $8.00.
Diversify
One thing you need learn very quickly when trying to make money online is to diversify. So if you believe me now, you’ll be good.
Diversify in two different areas. First, diverisfy your income sources. More specifically, Google Adsense is great, but sooner or later you must find other ad networks, affiliate opportunities, etc. I will write more about this in future articles.
The second is to diversify your niches. Sure you start a blog and are lovin’ it. But don’t get too attached to it thinking you’ll be able to quit your job. Sure it can and has happen but after a few months of a very steep learning curve, get out there and start another and another. Sooner or later you will say…
“I hit it!”
So in the 12th month I decided to regroup and start another blog in a completely different niche.
In month 13, I made over $14.00. BOOM!
In month 14, I made over $60.00.
In month 15 I made over $200.00.
I started to get excited. I thought wow, this is great! It’s possible to make a little extra money having fun, blogging about what I enjoy.
I set a meager goal. I was cautious. I was a realist. I believed this new site was capable of making about $600 a month.
Three months later I made over $2,000.00 in one month on that one blog.
Keep in mind, this blog is only 6 months old.
Fear never sleeps
I started to get scared! This is great but what happens if something bad happens?! What if someone finds out about this? They (whoever they are) are going to stop me!
Fear, she is irrational, she is.
No one stopped me.
At this point I did start to look for other ways to make money on this single blog.
Twelve months later, I made $7,300.00 in one month.
Two-thirds of this income was from those new sources of income. One-third was still from Google Adsense.
My largest Google Adsense check.
Eleven months later it peaked.
In each of the following two months I made over $10,000.00per month.
One blog. A ton of work.
You can do it too.
I know because I did it.
