If you are like me, your interest in this movie is one of curiosity. Like, exactly how much of this movie is 8 bit being it’s a 3d animation movie.
Answer: not much, but it is a very good movie, according to my kids.
Ralph is a video game villain who has been unhappily trapped inside the 8 bit world for 30 years doing the same thing over and over. The game he constantly wrecks is called Fix-It Felix Jr nestled in Litwak’s Family Fun Center. Why is he unhappy? Because he does not like being the bad guy. All the game characters treat him poorly.
Which is loosely based on the 1986 arcade game called Rampage. Ralph wrecks buildings, just like the characters in Rampage. Only it’s Felix’s job to repair the damage done by Ralph.
The adventure begins when Ralph escapes the tyranny of his game via the magic powerstrip portal to try out some of the other games on for size. Only to find he needs to go home again…
… to find true happiness.
Wreck-It Ralph is getting some good reviews and my kids really enjoyed the storyline. However you might be disappointed hoping to see a lot of 8 bit imagery.
The movie trailer shows the fictitious arcade game and game play and it’s worth a watch (below). And hey, Disney gets some props for the cool semi 8 bit movie poster and logo!
